Cancer has been on the "rise" since I first notice it when I heard a former teacher of mine from high school past away from it when I was attending college at the them time.
Summer 1997 Job Internship Experience with the American Cancer Socity
I had the opportunity to explore this when I had an internship at the American Cancer Society's state headquarters in the summer of 1997 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. My job during this 10-week long summer internship of 1997 was to help market this Hmong Patient Video (see hmong health). I was supervised by Ruth D.-Patient Services Specialist at ACS, who is currently Prostate Cancer Program Coordinator with HealthEast Cancer Care in Maplewood, MN. During my internship, I was able to increase my knowledge of "cancer" from a variety of local professionals that included:
-Nancy Grandt, an Oncology Care Management Specialist at HealthEast St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul.
-Mao Thao, who I met at a Hmong Health Care Professional Coalition Monthly Meeting at the Lao Family Community Center
-Chue Xiong, RN of Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic at the St. Paul Ramsey Medical Center. Xiong was on the health professionals in the focus group for the Hmong Cancer Patient Video

"Some of the most common symptoms of a brain tumor are headaches (headaches that wake you up in the morning), seizures in a person who does not have a history of seizures, cognitive or personality changes, eye weakness, nausea or vomiting, speech disturbances, or memory loss. While these are the most common symptoms of a brain tumor, they can also indicate other medical problems. If you are having any of these symptoms, it is important to schedule an appointment with your doctor who can give you a definitive diagnosis."

Below is an e-mail prayer request sent through my local church, which is just a sample I feel of many cancer patients. May we learn from this...

ANONYMOUS just called from Rochester. He asked if we could have the church pray for him again. He just began to experience pain from the cancer about a week ago, and now he is in almost constant pain. He has an appointment to see a doctor on Wednesday to see if they can give him something for the pain. The doctors at Mayo aren't doing anything about the cancer, because they have said it is too far advanced. ANONYMOUS is still asking God to heal him, and is putting his trust in God for deliverance from this cancer. So please ask people to join ANONYMOUS in prayer for healing and for relief from the pain. ANONYMOUS said that he especially needs prayer to overcome discouragement. He is being attacked in his thoughts with what might have been, and the "if onlys".
Did you know that charred black burnt food can contribute to cancer?
Grilling causes cancer?
Related entries: Strange & Funny BBQ News, Healthy Grilling
According to this article by Dana Farber eating grilled food can increase your risk of cancer. Isnt that just peachy? I mean what doesnt cause cancer these days?
"Research has shown that high-heat grilling can convert proteins in red meat, pork, poultry and fish into heterocyclic amines, chemicals that have been linked to a number of cancers. Also, the smoke generated when fat and juices drip on the hot coals or rocks can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, another potential cancer causing chemical. As the smoke rises up past the food it can deposit PAHs on the surface of the meat."
"Does Grilling Pose a Cancer Risk?
Some studies suggest there may be a cancer risk related to eating food cooked by high-heat cooking techniques as grilling, frying, and broiling. Based on present research findings, eating moderate amounts of grilled meats like fish, meat, and poultry cooked without charring to a safe temperature does not pose a problem.
To prevent charring, remove visible fat that can cause a flare-up. Precook meat in the microwave immediately before placing it on the grill to release some of the juices that can drop on coals. Cook food in the center of the grill and move coals to the side to prevent fat and juices from dripping on them. Cut charred portions off the meat."
"though it has been known for some time that meats cooked at high temperatures produce cancer-causing compounds, researchers say that this studys increased cancer risks could be due to the higher fat content in the meat women were eating vs how the meat was cooked. There was agreement, however, that the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables could account for why the women who ate more fruits and veggies had lower cancer risk.

"Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil, rock and water.
The problem is when it enters your home, especially when it's sealed up tight like we like it in the winter, then it can be deadly over time. And that's why we're more at risk living here in the Midwest.
Radon enters a home as a gas, getting in through cracks in your foundation or seeping through the concrete of your basement.
When your home is closed up, the pressure inside acts like a vacuum, sucking the gas in from the ground and dispersing it throughout your home.

One orthopedic doctor Ive seen suggests a hip replacement is in my future. Ive much to do to rehabilitate my body from the nasty effects of the chemo and the subsequent months in bed. MONDAY, July 17 (HealthDay News) -- Nearly half of all cancer deaths are preventable.
That remarkable news comes with an equally stunning corollary -- the key to success doesn't rest with some undiscovered therapies or treatments. Much of cancer's toll can be reduced with simple precautions, such as lifestyle changes and routine screenings.
But somehow that message isn't getting through to enough people.
"We can't beg people to change their behavior, to make the lifestyle changes that we know will reduce cancer risk," said Carolyn "Bo" Aldige, president of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation, in Alexandria, Va.
The biggest threat, of course, is smoking. "You'd have to live on another planet not to know smoking causes cancer," Aldige said.
Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in U.S. society. Tobacco causes nearly one in five deaths in the United States, killing about 438,000 Americans each year, according to the American Cancer Society.
Yet, about 45 million adults still smoke -- about 23 percent of men and 19 percent of women.
Need more proof that much of cancer's misery is self-inflicted?
Experts estimate that about one in three of the 564,830 deaths from all forms of cancer this year will be related to poor nutrition, inactivity, overweight and obesity.
Research has shown that "excess calories cause the mutations that start genes going down the pathways that cause cells to divide out of control, and that's what cancer is," Aldige said. "If everybody today magically had the appropriate body mass index, we'd start seeing a lot less colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer," she said.
But there's a highly effective second line of defense against each of these cancers and many others -- screenings. Doctors can test for these cancers, as well as testicular, cervical and other kinds of malignancies, and often catch them before they've gone too far. And taking the tests usually requires little time and causes only minimal discomfort.
Eventually, there will even be screenings for lung cancer, probably in the form of "spiral CT" scanning, using special equipment to obtain multiple cross-sectional images of the organs and tissues of the chest, Aldige said.
Then there's melanoma, the deadly skin cancer that's on the rise. An estimated 62,190 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed in the United States this year, and 7,910 people will die of it, according to the American Cancer Society.
But melanoma is highly curable if it's caught in its early stages. The best way to do that: Check your own skin about once a month and become familiar with the pattern of moles, freckles, and other marks so you'll spot any changes. And a skin exam should be part of a routine cancer checkup by a doctor or qualified health professional.
Many people know that too much sun causes skin cancer, and they use sun block to protect themselves. But not many know that you need some sun every day -- about 15 to 20 minutes' worth, especially younger people, for vitamin D. The trick is to go out before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m. during warm weather months, Aldige said.
Vitamins play an important role in cancer prevention as well, she said, and eating properly and taking recommended supplements can help.
Yet, the overall problem isn't just one of people refusing to do what's good for them, said Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, program director of cancer occurrence at the American Cancer Society.
"It is access to care," he said. "Recently, the federal government has made access to breast and cervical cancer screenings available to women. But a large percentage of the population is uninsured, and it is a question of access and care," he said.
"We cannot completely prevent cancer," Jemal added, "but we can substantially improve by doing the right thing."

"What You Body Needs
On the average, our bodies need at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night. This enables them to resist disease, maintain strength and endurance, increase vitality, improve our mood, and slow down the aging process.
You can live about five to seven days without water, about five to seven weeks without food, but only about five minutes without oxygen. Therefore, oxygenate your body throughout the day by taking one-minute deep breathing breaks. In this exercise you breathe in deeply through your nose, then blow the air out through your mouth.
Many Americans are in the process of developing cancer due to stressful lifestyles, lack of exercise, and an excessive intake of sugar, processed foods, hydrogenated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Therefore, in my opinion, healthy dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle habits will help fight against a majority of cancers"-from Dr. Colbert

"Paying for Cancer Treatment
It's no secret that cancer drugs can be expensive, and dealing with different doctors and hospitals at various stages of your treatment can be confusing. These resources can help:..
"This week, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nonprofit Washington-based watchdog group on nutrition and food safety, once again pushed the Food and Drug Administration to look at the chemicals – or “caramel coloring” – that turn cola brown.
The CSPI’s petition asks the FDA to ban caramel colorings that are produced by an ammonia or ammonia-sulfite process and contain 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) and 4-methylimidazole (4-MI). The petition, originally filed on February 16, 2011, claims both 2-MI and 4-MI are “carcinogenic in animal studies.”
The animal studies linking 4-MI to cancer in lab mice and rats prompted the state of California to officially list 4-MI as a carcinogen on January 7, 2011, under California’s Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. There have been no studies thus far on the chemicals’ risk to humans.
The most recent call to arms from the CSPI comes after the watchdog group found a sampling of colas, including Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Pepsi and Diet Pepsi, surpassed the allotted 29 milligrams of 4-MI per day under Proposition 65.
CSPI also urged the FDA to change the “caramel coloring” label to “chemically modified caramel coloring” or “ammonia-sulfite process caramel coloring” to avoid any confusion with consumers over the coloring’s makeup.
“When most people see ‘caramel coloring’ on food labels, they likely interpret that quite literally and assume the ingredient is similar to what you might get by gently melting sugar in a saucepan,” said CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson in a public statement.
The statement continued, “The reality is quite different. Colorings made with the ammonia or ammonia-sulfite process contain carcinogens and don’t belong in the food supply. In any event, they shouldn’t be obscured by such an innocuous-sounding name as ‘caramel coloring.’"
But reviews of the data by the FDA and American Beverage Association found the causation between caramel coloring and the risk of cancer to be insufficient.
"This is nothing more than CSPI scare tactics, and their claims are outrageous. The science simply does not show that 4-MEI in foods or beverages is a threat to human health," responded the American Beverage Association in a news release.
The beverage association also noted that, "In fact, findings of regulatory agencies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, European Food Safety Authority and Health Canada, consider caramel coloring safe for use in foods and beverages. CSPI fraudulently claims to be operating in the interest of the public's health when it is clear its only motivation is to scare the American people."
The FDA lists caramel coloring as "generally recognized as safe" or “GRAS.” Regardless, members of the beverage association – including Coca-Cola – will modify the coloring so they can continue to sell their products in California without a cancer warning label.
“Our member companies will still use caramel coloring in certain products, as always. The companies that make caramel coloring for our members' soft drinks are producing it to meet California's new standard,” the beverage association said in a separate statement.
“Consumers will notice no difference in our products and have no reason at all for any health concerns.”
In 2011 when the CSPI first filed the petition, former director of the Vanderbilt University Center in Molecular Toxicology and well-known toxicologist F. Peter Guengerich spoke to ABC News.
“If you look at the study in terms of what the mice got, in terms of causing any effect, a human being would have to drink more than 1,000 sodas a day,” he said.
Today, his opinion remains the same.
Guengerich said in a statement this week, “The amounts of 4-MI consumed in beverages (and food) is extremely low compared to the high, long-term levels given the mice and rats, and extrapolation of either any harmful or beneficial results from these rodent models to humans at this time is not scientifically valid.”..
"(CNN) -- HLN's Nancy Grace announced on her program Monday night that she had surgery to remove a solid mass that doctors had feared could be cancer.
The operation last Tuesday, which Grace said took "hours and hours,'' revealed that the mass was not malignant, she said.
Speaking by phone to substitute host Jean Casarez of In Session, Grace said she is recovering at home with her husband, David, and their 3-year-old twins, John David and Lucy Elizabeth.
A nurse administering an ultrasound test to Grace during a routine gynecologist visit discovered the growth, Grace said.
Grace had felt no symptoms and scheduled the appointment based on "a hunch,'' she said.
During the ultrasound, the nurse called in the doctor who looked at the results and said he wanted to speak to Grace in his office.
"He was very calm and very honest and he told me they had discovered a mass,'' Grace said.
When the doctor said it could be cancer, Grace described it as "that moment you see in movies and you hear about that always happens to somebody else but not to you."
Surgery was scheduled for a few days later at Northside Hospital in the Atlanta, Georgia, area.
"It seemed like the world just stopped because you know when you wait a long time for happiness...it always just feels like it could be taken away,'' she said, referring to her marriage and the birth of her children.
"I think what bothered me most was thinking about watching the twins on the other side of life and seeing them grow up without a mother,'' Grace said.
"And I think about it so many times on our show because we have stories of children who endured so much and don't have anybody to love them."
Saying she was "the lucky one,'' Grace urged women to make appointments for routine exams even if they feel fine.
The former Fulton County, Georgia, prosecutor and Court TV host joined the HLN prime-time lineup in February 2005.

"BOSTON, MASS. (ANS) -- Carolyn Rubenstein, author of “Perseverance: True Voices of Cancer Survivors,” shares the stories of 20 college and graduate students who discovered strength and hope when they found themselves facing their worst fears.
Faith, in some form or other, is a theme in virtually every story in “Perseverance.” Much like 2 Peter 1:6, which places perseverance next to godliness, the book offers a plan for a life well-lived.
Rubenstein, who is working on a Ph.D. at Harvard, writes that “all I really need to know, I’ve learned from childhood cancer survivors. And, no matter what you’re going through in your life, the wisdom of these remarkable people can help you cope, survive, and even improve your quality of life as well.”
“Perseverance,” released on Tuesday, August 18, is an outgrowth of Rubenstein’s work with a nonprofit she founded for kids with cancer when she was 14 called Carolyn's Compassionate Children. Although it began as a pen-pal program to link children with cancer with their healthy peers, it has evolved into a source of financial giving for college-bound cancer survivors, having awarded more than $70,000 in scholarships.
Now, at 24, Rubenstein, having been impacted by these individuals, has compiled a book of powerful testimonies with messages that will have an impact on all of us, no matter what trial we are facing.
The young people tell their own stories, with introductions and conclusions from Rubenstein. She notes that they represent a new generation. Fifty years ago, childhood cancer was almost always a death sentence; today, four out of five children reach the important five-year survival milestone.
One chapter chronicles the journey of Monique Valdez and begins by quoting Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Valdez thought she had a plan for her life, but it turned out that God had a different plan that included being diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 19. Today, she plans to go into clinical psychology and help young cancer patients. “By reaching out to those who have suffered, I can reassure them that this difficult time is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter; a chapter full of hope, love, and faith,” she says.
All of the people profiled in “Perseverance” show a remarkable maturity and determination. And, because of what they have been through and the support they have received, they want to help others by going into the medical field, raising money for other cancer patients or some other kind of service. In one of the most poignant moments in the book, a nurse encourages Emily Corwin, wearing a pair of jeans that conceal scars from cancer surgery, “to show that leg off.”
The book cover
“She wanted me to be proud of my scars,” Corwin says. “People ask about them sometimes, but it just gives me a chance to share my experience and encourage others. I’m proud of those scars now!” Corwin and the other survivors in this book rebuild their lives with the lessons they have learned from cancer. “I am stronger today than ever before,” she says. “I am more confident in myself. I strongly believe that after cancer, I can do anything.”
Rubenstein shows that the life lessons taken from these stories can teach us all how to make the most of our lives in any situation. “Perseverance” released on Tuesday, August 18, from Forge Books and will be available in bookstores nationwide. For more information about Rubenstein, visit www.CarolynRubenstein.com.

Fight causes of abortion, KHRC tells church leaders Skin
"In 1996, Mary Ann was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer. Soon, she began calling the Counseling Center to ask for prayers. Even though a Christian, Mary Ann was angry and questioned God and stopped going to church. A separated single mother, Mary Ann thought her illness was a curse for all her sins in the past. But in spite of how angry she felt towards God, Mary Ann continued to call the Center for prayer and encouragement.
Over the years, the cancer transferred from her left breast to the right, and she eventually had to undergo mastectomy. Wanting to survive, Mary Ann underwent all possible treatments for cancer - chemotherapy, radiation, lumpectomy, immuno therapy, and various surgeries, along with different kinds of medications.
In July 2003, doctors found lumps in her lungs the size of 25-centavo coins. Within 30 days, the growth multiplied from 3 to 15 lumps, and doctors diagnosed her case as stage 4 lung cancer. This time, instead of feeling more angry, Mary Ann saw it as a wake-up call from God. She knew God was calling her and her children back to Him. Mary Ann and her two kids recommitted their lives to Christ and began attending church once again. It was then that her relationship with her kids and family began to flourish.
Still, Mary Ann's battle with cancer continued, and she developed complications - type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart enlargement and arthritis. By this time, her family hardly had any money left to sustain her treatment and medication.
Then, last August 9, during a routine chest x-ray, doctors were surprised to find her lungs clear of any growth. Perplexed, doctors suggested that Mary Ann undergo the test again, and for the second time it showed that the lumps in her lungs had disappeared. Somewhat still unconvinced, Mary Ann was asked to have her chest x-rayed for the third time, and by God's miracle it was indeed clear. She underwent a couple of other tests, and doctors diagnosed her totally healed of cancer.
Mary Ann gives all the glory to God for her miraculous healing. She is also deeply thankful to counselors of The 700 Club Counseling Center for tirelessly praying for her through her nine years of battle with cancer. And in time, God answered their prayers. Today, Mary Ann is a committed member of their church choir, while her kids are with the dance and music ministry."
